Food

Safe water and abundant food are made possible with the help of Chlor-Alkali chemistry.

When you take a drink of water, chlor-alkali chemistry helps to prevent you from getting sick. Chlor-Alkali chemistry plays a vital role in boosting the amount of crops produced and in protecting crops from pests. It’s even found around the home to keep kitchen counters disinfected.

Chlor-Alkali chemicals are critical in food applications such as:

  • Clean paper and packaging to transport our foods,
  • Fertilisers and herbicides used to grow food,
  • Potassium hydroxide is important in regulating the acidity of soils to ensure that crops have the best possible conditions to grow in,
  • Sodium-based preservatives from caustic soda help to keep our food fresher for longer,
  • Common table salt (sodium chloride) which we use to make hundreds of other products (or to flavour food!)
